Use **Component Building Mode** to create or change a component on the canvas with natural language. Hero's **component builder agent** applies your prompts to the component you have open in the Component Builder.

This mode is different from [How Hero AI Executes Components](docId\:MGZX3dKiIv_vi2MHOynEV), where the **general companion** finds and runs components marked **Visible to Hero AI** from chat outside the builder.

For how Hero AI switches between companion and building modes, see [Hero AI Companion](docId\:crQKFVnGpCz_wJ8xtHDs7).

## Enter Component Building Mode

There is **no separate Building Mode toggle** in settings. The companion enters **Component Building Mode** when Hero AI opens **with component canvas context** (the product knows which component you are editing in the Component Builder).

### Steps to Enter Component Building Mode

1. Open or create a component in the Component Builder (see [Components](docId\:c7ipCS5NdR9sGu4z6Pjs0)).
2. Open **Hero AI** from the top-right toolbar, or use the canvas entry point if your build shows **Build with Hero AI** on the flow footer.
3. Confirm the companion shows **Component Building Mode** (see below) before you send a build or modify prompt.

### What You Should See in Component Building Mode

When Building Mode is active, the Hero AI panel typically shows:

- A banner such as **Entered Component Building Mode** near the top of the panel.
- A footer bar labeled **Component Building Mode**.
- A welcome message from Hero's **component builder agent** (for example, that it can help you build components in Canvas).

If you open Hero AI from the main toolbar on the **Components** list and see only **Hello! How can I help you today?**, you are in the **general companion**, not Component Building Mode. Open the component in the Component Builder first, then open Hero AI again.

## Create or Modify a Component with Hero AI

1. Enter **Component Building Mode** on the component canvas.
2. Describe what you want (for example: "Add a VirusTotal enrichment action and map the URL input from the trigger observable.").
3. Review the updated component on the canvas and refine with follow-up prompts.
4. **Save** the component when you are satisfied.

## Prompt Tips

- Name connectors, intents, and data shapes clearly.
- State inputs and outputs you need (for example, "accept a URL string and return reputation score").
- Ask for error handling when external APIs are involved.
